It’s time to power up renewable energy and step off the gas in Manitoba!
We as Manitobans need solutions that address the affordability crisis and climate crisis at the same time. We need to prepare Manitoba for climate change, create green jobs, and support Indigenous leadership and low-income households in the energy transition.
Transitioning to renewable energy for heating homes, workplaces, and community spaces is a key step to reduce emissions from natural gas that will also reduce energy bills over time.
This means we must:
- Improve the energy efficiency of buildings to reduce energy use
- Switch to air and ground source heat pumps to meet our heating and cooling demands, phasing out the use of natural gas
- Increase electrical grid capacity by scaling up wind and solar
- Support Indigenous leadership in the energy transition
If we do this right, it will have many benefits, including:
- Create stable jobs in the building and energy sectors
- Reduce energy bills, especially for low-income households and renters
- Make homes, workplaces, and community spaces healthier and more comfortable
- Improve the security and resilience of the energy system
- Help reduce emissions and increase climate adaptation
In the coming decade we will not have enough electricity to meet demand if we do not take these critical actions.
Tell Manitoba’s Premier, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and the Minister of Manitoba Hydro and Finance that Manitobans want:
- To increase funding for energy efficiency supports, including for low-income households and renters
- To phase out natural gas by increasing air source and ground source heat pumps
- To increase investment in solar and wind for electricity production, in collaboration with Indigenous Nations and communities
